Details:
Hilotrons is a Canadian indie pop band from Ottawa, Ontario. Initially an electronic dance music band, they began to incorporate a blend of pop styles into their sound. Their breakthrough album, Happymatic (2008), was a longlisted nominee for the 2008 Polaris Music Prize.
I had previously done work with Hilotrons , including a website and various gig posters. They approached me to do an LP cover design, as well as the back panel. I was given cart blanche for the cover, and more specificity for the back panel. My approach the front design was a strange double exposure head floating over a lake. It made think of something you might see in a David Lynch film. Like his films and art, Hilotrons seem like an amazing anomaly to me. I also emphasized that the absence of their name on the cover, or any copy at all, would be an interesting strategy. As the cover itself would entice consumers to pull the record out and take a closer look.
